Welcome from the Superintendent

Hello! My name is Pat Fahed Trice, and I am the Superintendent of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB).

VSDB serves as the hub of expertise in Virginia for the education of students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/vision impaired, deafblind, and blind or deaf with other disabilities. At VSDB, we are passionate about educating the whole child and empowering students to GROW, DO, and BECOME all that they can be!

Offering a fully accessible learning environment, students engage in innovative programs and services that prepare them for life after graduation. At VSDB, learning extends beyond the classroom day into the residential program, where both day and residential students may access a variety of learning experiences.

Families are essential partners in the education process. Students go home every weekend, excited to share with parents what they have learned during the week and anxious to return to learn more!

VSDB offers prescriptive programs that meet individual student needs through a Virginia Department of Education aligned curriculum that prepares students to move on to post-secondary educational opportunities or into the workforce environment. VSDB is proud to offer programs that are unique to Virginia and that foster the development of independent living, academic, and workforce skills that support success after graduation.

Programs such as the on-campus Independent Living Apartments, the ACHIEVE Workforce Experience, and the CROPS Agricultural and Horticultural programs are only a few of the unique real world learning opportunities found only at VSDB. Activities designed to promote positive social skills and peer interactions allow students to develop friendships that last a lifetime!

At VSDB, students are not the “only one” but are “one of many” and share same life experiences with their peers. Being at VSDB allows students to GROW true friendships, to DO and reach their potential, and to BECOME productive citizens within their communities.

Please explore our website and get to know VSDB as an educational option for your child. We would welcome the opportunity to schedule a tour of VSDB’s campus, programs, and services. VSDB is the opportunity your child has been waiting for!  I look forward to meeting you!

With warmest regards,

Pat Trice
